I am planning to make a great butterfly garden and seeking some answers.|||Asclepias also known as butterfly weed or milkweed. Monarchs will lay their eggs on these plants. Butterfly bush is a good one. Make sure there is a water source close by (anything that collects even small amounts of water). Good luck.|||I don't know that Monarch will ever come to WA but there are a lot of butterflies that will!
Native plants are always a good way to go! They are natural food sources for the butterflies who do come to your area and they look for them! Pop into a local nursery and ask questions! Do a little research and see what varieties of butterflies are normal for your area and what their preferred food sources are and let that information guide you.
Some plants that it seems all butterflies like are cone flowers, asters, butterfly bushes, bee balm (invasive, be careful!), yarrow and sedums. Much of this depends on the amount of light, type of soil and water available in your flower beds. Once again, a knowledgeable nursery person can help guide you!|||butterfly bush for one (yes, really)
