When did people start to realize that the butterfly style of goaltending is superior?

If you watch older games, you can see that goalies don't use the butterfly; they make most of their saves standing up, on their knees, or just flopping around on the ice. When did goalies start to use the butterfly and realize that it was better?|||Tony Esposito and Vladislav Tretiak popularized it in the 70s, but very few coaches taught it until the early 80s.

Patrick Roy was the first of the current generation to have actually been taught it as a kid, and it's been a booming business since then.|||When their equipment got bigger and they didn't have to rely on diving around and praying the puck didn't hit their helmetless head in the process :-)|||When Patrick Roy won a stanley cup. Roy made the butterfly style famous. However, with advances in stick technology and the skills of shooters increasing to be able to shelf it, the butterfly is slowly losing ground to a more hybrid style, this is especially true in the NHL and AHL.|||When they started making pads good enough to protect the goalie's knees. Old school pads were incredibly cheasie and the butterfly position would have been unbelievably painful. Also, with how heavy those old school pads were recovering from the butterfly would have been very strenuous, and would take too long.|||For one, when the pads got bigger and the goalies got more flexible with more endurance training and conditioning.... Also the players just got started getting bigger... bigger players with bigger pads and more flexibility took away a lot of net and the butterfly positioning really played the odds by cutting out angles from a shooter's perspective.

There was hybrid stand up with the butterfly technique used by a lot of goalies in the early 80s (and Glenn Hall in the '60s innovated this style) but Roy was the first really consistent user of the butterfly who won a cup with it. After that, it dominated goaltending.

It still is dominant but more and more goalies rely on athleticism and unorthodox techniques more than the butterfly.... since the Butterfly technique is a disciplined system that is all about cutting the odds it doesn't leave a lot of creativity with the puck or the position leaving the net... players like Brodeur, Turco and Hasek (dominant goalies for the past seasons) don't rely on the Butterfly for this reason.|||PATRICK ROY...

4 Cups, it was about then...|||when martin brodeur started playing|||It started with Glen Hall and Terry Sawchuck adopted it after he began to age and had several productive years with it. Tony Esposito had a great carrer using the butterfly and he was not a man whocould see very well. Pat Roy is your best body of evidence!
